Tyriel was whistling a happy tune as he groomed a large white stallion in the main courtyard. He had just decided to head to the well to retrieve a bucket of clean water when a bloody and desiccated boar carcass suddenly dropped out of nowhere and landed at his feet with a Thud!

The horse whinnied and reared up when the smelly boar hit the ground, but instantly calmed again when the Angelic distracted him simply by stretching his wings out wide and looking into his eyes.

“Whoa, Neige,” Tyriel said as he spilled the contents of the bucket over his ankles to clear the spatter of blood that had sprayed up from the putrid carcass, “you should be used to Kirin’s little presents by now.”

Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!

The nervous steed whinnied in protest, but largely ignored the huge black Dragon that landed not ten paces away.

“Supper?” Tyriel asked the Dragon sarcastically as he stooped down to examine what was left of the animal. The boar’s rotting ear detached from its body as the Nephilim lifted it in his hand.

The Dragon huffed at Tyriel and narrowed his deep green eyes before transforming into his human form.

As Tyriel cleaned his fingers off by wiping them on the grass, Kirin removed the prepared packet of clothing from the inside corner cupboard of the garden shed then quickly moved toward the well. Tyriel could tell by his demeanor that he was in a foul mood.

“We have a problem,” Kirin growled as Tyriel blocked him from going further and offered him a bucket of clean water. After accepting the offering, Kirin quickly washed his hands, then smoothed back his glossy brown curls. He knelt down next to the boar and pointed to a rusty old trap still attached to the animal’s left rear leg. “This poor creature was illegally poached, then left to die.”

Tyriel lowered himself down at Kirin’s side, leaned over the carcass, and examined the implement. It was a rather expensive snap-type trap made of the purest iron. “This trap was not manufactured by any of the locals, Ki,” he observed. “They have little money to purchase such devices—Even for hunting. They usually strip wire, mostly from old bushel baskets, and use it to make snares.”

Kirin nodded his agreement. “There are more wasted kills, Ty,” Kirin replied. “I found at least three more hogs, as well as a dozen or so rabbits strewn about the forest. Most of them were immature animals that were trapped sometime during the last two weeks, but never harvested.”

Tyriel looked up at his companion with concern. “But, that makes no sense, Kirin. Poachers collect their bounties. They do not leave them to rot in the woods.”

“That’s true,” Kirin agreed. He gazed at Tyriel with concern. After a moment of quiet reflection, he asked, “What type of person would waste Nature’s resources like this, Ty?” He shook his head despondently. “These animals run on Greynor lands. The older ones sustain us, and we make certain their younger survive long enough to breed and keep the cycle going.
